Google DeepMind Research Ready

is a pioneering new scheme supporting UK universities to deliver research placements

that provide undergraduate students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds and underrepresented groups within engineering with research experience in artificial intelligence (AI), giving them the tools and opportunities to excel in the field of AI research.

The University of Liverpool, in collaboration with Google DeepMind, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Hg Foundation and the EPSRC AI hub in Chemistry (AIchemy), is offering a unique, multidisciplinary eight-week paid summer internship where you'll contribute to cutting-edge research projects on (embodied) AI for real-world applications.

It is open to current undergraduates in their penultimate or final year who have the potential to become the future of research in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Robotics. See our eligibility criteria for more details.

This programme involves a paid 8-week research internship taking place between 30 June and 22 August 2025. You will work with a researcher in our host Departments on a project related to AI or robotics. Alongside your research project, you can also attend:

  • Talks from academics and industrial speakers working on AI and robotics.
  • Research Skills Workshops: Including literature review, scientific writing and presentation skills.
  • Information sessions covering topics such as postgraduate applications and diverse career paths in AI and robotics.

You are not required to have any previous research experience, however those who have an interest in postgraduate study will benefit most from this programme.

This internship will empower you to:

  • Immerse yourself in the world of postgraduate research: Experience firsthand what it's like to be a researcher working in AI and robotics at the University of Liverpool, a Russell Group university renowned for its pioneering work in this field.
  • Gain hands-on research experience: Benefit from hands-on experience in our labs and close mentorship from leading experts, preparing you for a successful research career.
  • Become a highly competitive candidate for postgraduate programs: Learn how to build compelling applications and secure funding for your future studies. We have a proven track record of our interns gaining acceptance into top-tier AI and robotics programmes.
  • Unlock your career potential in AI and robotics: Explore diverse career paths and discover exciting opportunities in both academia and industry.
  • Connect with a vibrant community of researchers: Engage with inspiring academics and fellow students who share your passion for AI and robotics, building a network that will support your future success.

You will also be invited to attend regular social events to get to know other interns in the host Departments as well as interns on different programmes at the University.

Partners

The scheme is a partnership between the Royal Academy of Engineering, Google DeepMind and The Hg Foundation.
It is funding up to 120 paid AI research placements in summer 2025, hosted by 12 UK universities.
